Tioman Island, Done Right: A Homestay, a Hike, and a Whole Lot of Heart

While snorkeling was our main reason for visiting Tioman Island, our stay at X Rector Finest in the village of Genting ended up being the highlight of the trip. It transformed our entire experience into something far more relaxed, comfortable, and memorable than we had expected.

We intentionally avoided large resorts or accommodations that felt too isolated. Genting struck the perfect balance. It’s a small, walkable village with charming beachfront guesthouses, a wide range of restaurants (Malay, Chinese, Indonesian, and Western), and a couple of convenient stores. Being close to the jetty also made arrival and departure by ferry surprisingly easy.

X Rector Finest and Wee, the Amazing Host!

X Rector stood out immediately. It was clear that Wee, the owner, had thoughtfully designed every detail with guest comfort in mind. This wasn’t just a place to sleep—it felt like being welcomed into a well-loved home. The common areas, spread along the main pathway, were open and inviting. We found ourselves moving freely between spaces as if it were our own house.

There are outdoor lounge areas overlooking the beach, complete with a TV and Bluetooth speaker—perfect for slow mornings with coffee. The “tea room,” essentially a shared kitchenette, features a self-service fridge stocked with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at very reasonable duty-free prices. Guests track their own consumption on an honor system, which speaks volumes about the trust and community Wee has created.

Then there’s the playroom—an air-conditioned haven filled with entertainment. It’s stocked with movies in both Chinese and English, a karaoke system, guitar, ukulele, darts, puzzles, board games, books, and more. There’s also filtered drinking water, snacks, and instant ramen available. The level of thoughtfulness is hard to overstate. Even the smallest details are meticulously organized—color-coded hangers for drying laundry, matching dishware by room—it’s a dream for anyone who appreciates good systems and clever design.

X Rector Advanced Snorkeling

Beyond the homestay itself, X Rector offers something truly unique: an advanced snorkeling class and guided tour. While there are plenty of dive shops around Tioman, Wee’s snorkeling program is unlike anything else. You absolutely CAN see amazing sea life by snorkeling without having to learn how to dive! We arrived with minimal experience, but after just 2.5 hours of training, we felt completely transformed.

We learned how to breathe calmly, clear water from our gear without surfacing, navigate waves near rocks, and use fins efficiently against strong currents. By the afternoon, we were confidently exploring coral reefs, caves, and rocky areas. Wee is an exceptional teacher—patient, methodical, and incredibly attentive.

Genting itself is wonderfully simple. You can walk from one end of the village to the other in about 15 minutes. There are no cars—just the occasional motorbike or sidecar. Life moves at a slower pace here, with everything centered along a single coastal path.

Short Hike from Genting to Paya

For a bit of adventure, we hiked through the jungle to the neighboring village of Paya. The trail is about 1.5 miles and took us roughly 45 minutes, climbing over a rocky, forested ridge. By the end, we were drenched in sweat, but the views were absolutely worth it. Along the way, we spotted lizards and even a large black-tailed squirrel, though no monkeys this time.

Paya, dominated by a large resort, made us appreciate the quiet charm of Genting even more.

Au Revoir at the Jetty!

On our final day, Wee personally drove us to the jetty and stayed to ensure we boarded the correct ferry. As it turns out, the Bluewater ferry doesn’t always clearly identify itself, and its schedule is… flexible, to say the least. Departures can shift by up to an hour depending on the captain’s whims (including breakfast plans!). Following Wee’s advice, we arrived an hour early—and thankfully so. The ferry showed up 40 minutes ahead of schedule and departed 20 minutes early. We even saw one unfortunate couple miss it and have to arrange an emergency speedboat transfer mid-ocean.

Moments like that made us even more grateful for Wee’s care and attention.

We left Tioman already planning our return. More than just a place to stay, X Rector is a labor of love—a space filled with intention, warmth, and genuine hospitality. After seeing other accommodations around the island, we can confidently say it’s one of the most comfortable and personalized stays you can find on Tioman.

We can’t wait to come back and spend more time with Wee, his mother, and his wife.
