Ubud: Past Its Prime or Still Sublime?

We might’ve missed the unadulterated beauty and bohemian charm of Ubud, Bali by about 25 years.

  • They said it’s overrun by tourists. It is. A symptom of its inherent exotic beauty.

  • They said the traffic is crazy. Particularly chaotic with tourist motorbike drivers. It wasn’t even high tourist season!

  • They said the authentic culture is now pop culture. Bali couldn’t help but be transformed into a gigantic Instagram reel by influencers. Very photogenic.

  • They said the local art is intricately carved, woven, dyed, painted bohemian folk art. Pretty sure World Market buys all their goods from Bali. 😂

  • They said people seek the eat-pray-love experience. Never seen so many solo female travelers in yoga attire trying to find their inner goddess. Wow. If not solo, then mom/daughter traveling duos, also common.

Find the Local Spots. It Still Exists.

All true…on the surface. Instead, find the local spots. Eat where the locals eat. Get off the main streets. Walk down the alleyway that opens up to a hidden oasis. Forego the Instagram spots and find an alternative, less touristed attraction. Spread the eating, praying, and loving! Hence, we escaped to east coast Amed, Bali!

While you might have to work at it a little harder, Ubud is still a good base camp for exploring. It’s a magical, spiritual place surrounded by stunning nature…and continues to be an affordable luxury if you’re looking for a culturally exotic, yet comfortable holiday.

We loved both versions of Ubud.
