Goodbye Harvey…and Virgil and Olive, too.
While in Japan, only the finest 7-11 brand “Yosemite Road” Cabernet Sauvignon for our celebratory toast after closing on the house! Haha.
Virgil-the-Versa (Mike’s car) went to a good home. A friend who could use a more economical vehicle for their long commute.
Olive-the-Outback (Akiko’s car) needs extra TLC but continues on to be useful as part of a friend’s fleet of courier vehicles.
Harvey-the-House went on the market on the coldest sub-zero Midwest day in January 2026 and in less than 24 hours, we had multiple offers, accepted a cash offer above asking price as-is with a waived inspection. We finally closed on the house and are truly house-less at this point. Thank you to our dear friend @maggiefoster_realtor for all the hustle and taking care of Harvey in our absence!
Harvey was a great starter home and in 23 years we never once wanted to upgrade, even though Harvey was small and tight and lacking a second bathroom and the laundry was in the cold single-car garage and…and…and…all the usual imperfections of an old 1950 house. However, it was perfect for us in a great neighborhood and close to everything. Harvey was the longest home we had…accidentally. We never meant to stay in Kansas City…ever. Our work temporarily relocated us and we ended up staying and making a whole Midwestern life full of friends, our dog Ogikubo (R.I.P.), great experiences, laughs, hobbies, careers.
Saying goodbye to Harvey-the-House is bittersweet. It’s not about the house, the awesome perennial garden that our friend A. Wolverton designed and planted with us, the huge backyard, or the stuff. It’s the life and memories we accumulated from this place. But now, our last remaining tether to Kansas City is sold.
From now on, we are at peace knowing that “Om Sweet Om” is any place we make it our Om. Namaste.
