Theth: The Yosemite of the Albanian Alps
After three unforgettable days in Theth, we couldn’t help but think of Yosemite Valley in California.
Nestled deep within Albania’s Accursed Mountains, Theth is a dramatic U-shaped glacial valley surrounded by towering limestone peaks, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear turquoise rivers. The similarities to Yosemite are striking—even down to a rugged, Half Dome-like formation rising above the valley.
The biggest difference? Solitude. Even during the height of summer, Theth still feels like a hidden backcountry escape. We often had the hiking trails and breathtaking viewpoints entirely to ourselves.
Our day began before dawn to watch the first alpenglow illuminate the mountains around 5:15 a.m. and ended with equally spectacular sunsets. In between, we hiked to waterfalls and panoramic overlooks, stood mesmerized by the rushing turquoise rivers, enjoyed fresh mountain trout for dinner, watched the animals go about their day, and finished each evening beneath a sky filled with stars.
If Yosemite and the European Alps had a quieter, lesser-known cousin, Theth might just be it.
